Bob Egelhoff is the winemaker for Egelhoff Wines. A seasoned professional, he has over 30 years of experience in the California wine industry. Egelhoff grew up in Orange County, California, and chose to attend UC Davis to study agricultural economics. Fascinated with the viticulture and enology program, he took all of the winegrowing and winemaking classes that were offered, became a teaching assistant and entered the world of farming grapes.
Initially, Egelhoff worked as a vineyard manager and conducted experiments in the field for his professors at UC Davis. This led him to the Napa Valley and a job with Beckstoffer Vineyards. In 1988, Egelhoff joined the newly started Merryvale Vineyards as assistant winemaker. While at Merryvale, Egelhoff managed production for more than a dozen nationally acclaimed brands including Harlan, Pahlmeyer, Oakford and Hartwell.
In 1993, Egelhoff began his career as a consulting winemaker for Tom Eddy and Robert Craig. David Arthur Vineyards, Amizetta Vineyards, Richard Partridge, Axios and Phelan Vineyard soon followed. He continues to make wine for Amizetta Vineyards and Axios Wines.
An essential philosophy behind Egelhoff’s approach to winemaking is his hands-on involvement in directing vineyard and winemaking practices and closely monitoring the results. As a consulting winemaker, Egelhoff oversees the estate vineyards and contracts with additional vineyards for his clients. Egelhoff manages the entire operation from harvest to bottling. Egelhoff’s winemaking is aimed towards producing full-bodied, elegant wine. Controlling all aspects of viticultural practices and combining old world and modern enological techniques enables him to produce wines that accurately reflect their grape source.
After two decades in the wine industry, Egelhoff and his wife, Marianna, decided to produce their own label. Grapes were selected from estate-owned hillside vineyards from owners Egelhoff had worked with over the years. In 1999, the first vintage of Egelhoff went into the crusher. A few more wines have been added along the way – including a Tawny Port, a Napa Valley Cabernet under the Walton Label, a Riesling and a venture down under blending Egelhoff Cabernet with Australian Shiraz to create the unique wine Two Worlds.
Egelhoff enjoys his family, golfing, abalone diving, fishing and traveling. He lives in St. Helena with his wife and two children.
